POLICE in Yate seized a high‑powered electric bike after it was “seen being ridden at speed on a public road”.
The Sur-Ron electric off-road bike was seized on March 28.
Police published a photo of the bike in North Road after its rider had been stopped, along with a warning about using the bikes on the road.
A spokesperson said: “These bikes are not classed as e‑bikes.
“Most high‑powered electric off‑road bikes, including Sur-Ron models, are treated in law as motor vehicles.
“It’s important for riders – and parents – to understand the law around these bikes.
“Sur-Rons are not classed as road‑legal e‑bikes. You cannot insure a standard Sur-Ron for road use.
“Sur-Rons do not meet the construction requirements for UK road use (such as type approval, lighting, indicators, registration compatibility, etc).
“Because of this, insurance companies will not insure them for use on public roads.
“If you ride a Surron on the road, the bike will be seized, and the rider will be reported for no insurance, no driving licence, no registration or tax, failing to display a number plate, and any further offences such as careless or dangerous driving and riding on a footpath
“We are committed to keeping our roads safe.
“Thank you to the community for reporting dangerous and antisocial riding—please keep sending information via 101 or the Avon & Somerset Police website.”
