Car owner injured as VW is stolen

POLICE say a car owner was injured as their car was stolen in Chipping Sodbury.

Three people have been arrested as part of a police investigation into the theft – and the car was later damaged in a police pursuit after being sold to a disqualified driver on false plates.

The incident in Smarts Green was reported to police shortly before 3.40pm on August 29.

A police spokesperson said: “It was reported that three people stole the vehicle and its owner was left with injuries that required hospital treatment, but were not life-threatening or life-changing. The victim has since been discharged home to continue their recovery.

“Two men and one woman, all aged in their 40s, were arrested on September 3.”

Police say their investigation is ongoing and anyone with information about the theft should call 101 and quote the incident number 5225 244 292.

The Volkswagen Scirocco car was recovered on September 2 after a pursuit across Bristol, which ended with the car being driven into an oncoming vehicle then rammed by police in Fishponds.

The driver, Bryan Smith, aged 47, was tasered by officers who smashed the car window.

Smith, of Easton, was charged with dangerous driving, failing to provide a specimen for analysis, driving while disqualified and driving without insurance.

He admitted the offences and is due to be sentenced at Bristol Crown Court in October.

Another man and a woman, both also aged in their 40s, were arrested during the incident but later released on conditional police bail.
